The distinction between industry and academic professionals in the earth sciences is often quite pronounced. The author has commenced his academic career after eight years in the mining exploration industry.It is to be expected that there will be differences in the teaching style, content and expected outcomes between lecturers with dominantly industry and and academic backgrounds. It is proposed that the focus of the discussion should be on the value placed on these differences by the students.
